Our policy initiative for this has three main objectives:

• Reduce the amount of energy consumed and waste produced through the delivery of our services
• Lower the size of DB Schenker's own carbon footprint and, in doing so, lower the carbon footprint of customers who use our services in preference to other operators and road haulage
• Our policy aims to make our services five times more energy efficient than road haulage

DB Schenker underlines the natural assumption of rail freight's sustainability as a means of transporting goods from points of supply and distribution. However, in line with Government thinking and the concerns of society, this natural assumption needs to be taken further by us to further improve our efficient use of resources. This policy creates a new ethos and promotes new practices for our people to ensure that all services delivered contribute to the sustainability of society.

Doing nothing and resting on the laurels of the environmental credentials of rail freight is not an option for us. Our customers have choices, and we are presenting them with a company that will deliver significant benefits in freight haulage and a lowering of their carbon footprint. We are passionate about growing our services, but do not want growth to come at the expense of the environment. Nobody can ignore climate change and that is why DB Schenker will work with customers to help reduce the size of their carbon footprint and other damaging emissions by using our services.
