EWS celebrates Territorial Army centenary

EWS, Britain’s largest rail freight operator and part of the DB Schenker organisation, today celebrated the centenary of the Territorial Army by inviting His Royal Highness The Duke of York to dedicate a locomotive in their honour.

 

The ceremony, held at the National Railway Museum in York, was attended by over 400 guests who saw a class 60 freight locomotive named “The Territorial Army Centenary”.

 

The locomotive was named by His Royal Highness The Duke of York with an accompanying fanfare. His Royal Highness was also joined for the naming ceremony by Major General David McDowall, the General Officer Commanding troops in Scotland and the North of England, and Graham Smith MBE, Planning Director for EWS.

 

At the ceremony HRH The Duke of York said:

 

“I hope that the sight of this locomotive will provide a reminder of the past achievements of the Territorial Army and help to encourage future public support for this great institution. I have great pleasure to in naming this locomotive The Territorial Army Centenary.”

 

Graham Smith said:

 

“EWS is proud to celebrate the centenary of the Territorial Army, and the commitment and strength of the men and women who serve. EWS operates a range of rail freight services for the Ministry of Defence and the locomotive dedicated today will provide a daily visible reminder of the work delivered by the Territorial Army as it hauls freight trains across Britain.”
